My Why: The Heart Behind Becoming Attorney Cofield

For a long time, I thought my “why” was simple: I want to become an attorney.

But the older I get, the more I realize my why is so much bigger than a title behind my name.

My why is about becoming.

Becoming the woman I once dreamed about. Becoming the woman God has been preparing through every chapter of my life—even the chapters I didn’t understand while I was living them.

My journey hasn’t been a straight line.

I became a mother young. I’ve experienced marriage and divorce. I built a career as a paralegal, spent years helping others navigate difficult moments, and somewhere along the way, that old dream of becoming an attorney kept whispering, You’re not finished yet.

Life took me in different directions, but the dream never completely left me.

When Life Changed the Plan

Then life shifted again.

I became a caregiver.

Suddenly, my days weren’t just about work, studying, goals, and plans. They became about family, appointments, advocating, making difficult decisions, showing up when I was exhausted, and learning just how strong love can require you to be.

There have been moments when I wondered:

Is it too late?

Can I really do this while carrying everything else?

Do I still have what it takes?

And every time doubt tried to convince me to put my dream away, something inside me refused.

I still see law school.

I still see myself walking across that stage.

I still see Attorney Cofield.

Why Now?

Because after 50, I understand something I didn’t fully understand when I was younger:

There is no expiration date on purpose.

Starting later doesn’t make the dream less meaningful.

Taking a detour doesn’t mean you missed your destination.

And caring for the people you love doesn’t mean you have to stop caring about the dreams God placed inside you.

I’m learning that I can be a daughter, a caregiver, a mother, a professional, a woman of faith—and still make room for Jacqueline.

I can still study.

I can still grow.

I can still reinvent myself.

I can still become.

Why I Created This Blog

Becoming Attorney Cofield started as a place to document my journey toward law school, but it has become something much bigger.

This is where I share the whole journey.

The LSAT studying and career goals.

Faith and the moments when I have to trust God even when I don’t understand the plan.

Family and caregiving.

Life after 50.

Relationships, friendships, healing, home projects, new beginnings—and those everyday moments that remind me life is happening while I’m chasing the dream.

I don’t want to show only the polished moments.

I want to document the uncertainty, the setbacks, the prayers, the wins, the tears, the laughter and the days when simply refusing to quit is the victory.

My Why

So, what is my why?

I’m doing this because I owe it to myself to find out what happens when I stop putting an expiration date on my dreams.

I’m doing it for the younger version of me who had dreams but couldn’t possibly know all the turns life would take.

I’m doing it for the woman I am today—the one who has survived, grown, loved, cared for others, started over and discovered that she still has dreams of her own.

And maybe I’m doing it for another woman, too.

The woman over 50 wondering whether she waited too long.

The caregiver who has spent so much time taking care of everyone else that she barely recognizes her own dreams anymore.

The woman sitting with an old goal in her heart wondering, Could I still do it?

My answer is:

Start.

Start scared.

Start tired.

Start later than you planned.

Start while you’re still figuring it out.

Just don’t count yourself out.

I don’t know exactly what every chapter ahead will look like.

But I know I’m going to keep turning the pages.

Because this isn’t just about becoming an attorney.

It’s about becoming the woman I was always meant to be.

And I’m not finished becoming yet.
